Cranberry Harvest Celebration

Hubby and I made it to the cranberry festival last weekend! Columbus Day weekend was the Cranberry Harvest Celebration.

Hubby and I learned all about how cranberries are harvested. We learned that wet harvest berries are when they flood the bogs like in the pictures here. These berries are used in the majority of cranberries sold in cans and sauces.

Dry harvest berries are picked off the stem with a machine as opposed to flooding the bog. This is a more labor intensive process and results in a higher quality berry. These are the bags of fresh berries you see at the store.

We had a beautiful crisp fall day to enjoy our time outside. They had tons of activities for children, lots of fair food, pumpkin painting, helicopter and pony rides, and of course the bog tours.

Hubby and I eat had a Boars Head bratwurst. I joked about getting a fried Oreo, but decided that wouldn’t be the best decision. After the bog tour, we split a stuffed Quahog and a small bag of kettle corn while walking back to our car.

While on the bog tour, we even got to try some berries as they came straight off the machinery! They were very tart but still delicious.

Of course, I had to get a bag of freshly harvested cranberries to take home with me.

If you haven’t made it out to a cranberry celebration, I would highly recommend it. Columbus Day weekend is when the festivities seem to happen each year.

So exciting! But it looks like I have to wait another year to go… hubs will be out of town and I’m so not dragging two little ones to this. Can you imagine how hyped up on sugar they’d be? Yikes! Can’t wait for your recipes next week and of course a recap after the event 🙂

It could be a really fun night for them. But I know what you mean about getting them all sugared up…
