Superbowl Snack Throwdown – Week 12

Winter is starting to show it’s signs here in Boston. We had snow on the ground when I woke up this morning. Hubby is very excited because that means it’s almost time for snowboarding season to start for him. I’m excited because that means the college bowl games and the Superbowl are getting closer!

Since it’s Sunday, it’s time to review Highlowaha’s Super Bowl Snack Throwdown recipes from Kate and Lauren. This week’s secret ingredient is onion! As a reminder, recipes are to be judged on the following criterion: Creative use of the ingredient, most likely to be eaten first, best photograph, and reproducibility. So now, on to the recipes (be sure to click through to check out the entire recipes).

Kate made Kickin’ Buffalo Chicken Pizza.

Lauren made Brie Stuffed Mushrooms.

I’m going to start with reproducibility this week. While Kate’s recipe is just an assembly of some ingredients, I definitely think both of these recipes could be executed by a cook of any skill level. Some beginners might be intimidated by the implied elegance of Lauren’s stuffed mushrooms, but they really aren’t difficult to make. And Lauren’s directions are very well written. That being said, I claim a tie in reproducibility.

For most likely to be eaten, I feel like I’ve said this before, but anything that is a self contained mini morsel of food always seems to go quickly. It’s just so easy to grab and go. For that reason, I think Lauren’s stuffed mushrooms would go faster at a football gathering.

When it comes to creative use of ingredient, this one is always hard for me. I think both of these recipes use onions in a way that they’re not overpowering, but simply work with the other ingredients for a great combination. I hate to do this for two categories, but I’m calling this one a tie as well.

Lastly is photography. This one hands down goes to Lauren. Her photographs once again look like they could be in any food magazine out there. I’m wondering what her secret is to getting natural light with these short days that are upon us…

Congratulations Lauren! I can’t wait to see what you and Kate come up with next week!!

I’ve placed my vote, now it’s time for you to cast yours! Be sure to go to Highlowaha to vote for your favorite of these two recipes.

Your food looks great! We are huge sports watchers in our house. I’m the only one who watches college football (Go Buckeyes!) and together we watch NFL. He is a Patriots fan and I’m a Brown’s fan. Please don’t laugh at my team of choice:) I was born and raised in Ohio and I have to support the home team!

Gotta say – the potato skins look great! But then, I’ve never had a mushroom dip before, so that sounds really interesting too.
    Great job everyone!
